Christine Thrivewell

Hi, I’m Chrissy. I write steamy stories, share self-publishing tips, and help authors like you turn creativity into cash. But before all that, I was a nervous newbie hitting “submit” on my very first story.

And wow—it. Was. Terrifying.

I sent it to a small online forum, convinced it would disappear into the void or, worse, be torn apart. But, to my shock and delight, readers actually loved it. Some even told me they did! That’s when I caught the writing bug.

Of course, getting there wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. One site had rejected the story earlier, which was crushing—even though they claimed it was only because of their schedule. I still wondered, “Is my writing… terrible?” Luckily, I found the courage to try again. And that one “yes” helped start everything.

💔 Rejection Stings, but the Writing Bug Bites Harder

Back in 2007, the internet was still figuring itself out, and so was I. Self-publishing wasn’t even a concept I understood, and I’d grown up believing publishing had to follow the “traditional” path.

My debut story? It was a mash-up of historical drama, lesbian romance, swashbuckling adventure, and a single steamy scene. Basically, it didn’t belong to any one genre and wasn’t exactly marketable.

But an indie publisher took a chance on me. And when readers bought it? That tiny win gave me the push I needed.

Only… I didn’t really know what I was doing.

🌀 A Wild Mix of Stories and a Messy Start

For years, I wrote whatever I wanted without much thought to branding or audience. Novels, short stories, romantic fluff, full-on erotica—you name it, I probably experimented with it.

The result? A portfolio that was chaotic, inconsistent, and impossible to market. The stories were fun, and readers enjoyed them, but when someone loved one book and then picked up another? Too often, those books were so different they lost interest.

Sales trickled in. Some here, some there. But I knew I was getting it wrong.

🎯 Finding My Focus with a Pen Name Experiment

Over the years I had done a lot of reading and a lot of research in order to tweak and tweak my back catalogue to improve sales. I knew that there were a lot of effective methods that worked well.

But so many of my fundamentals were just wrong.

In the end, I decided to conduct an experiment.

I started a brand new pen name. Completely fresh. Completley disconnected from anything I had ever done before. I told no one, and I did no marketting with the audience I already had: it was fundemental that this experiment had no outside influnce.

I focused on one niche. A niche I knew had an audience, and that I knew would be good fun.

I did not chase the biggest trends or write something I didn’t want to write.

But I did do a whole bunch of research to make sure I got this niche RIGHT.

I had the right kind of plot, the right kind of tone, a great cover, and a title that was so on-the-nose I almost didn’t use it, but you have to tell people what your book is! So I pushed on and made sure that my brand new book, with a brand new pen name, fresh out of the gate, was absolutely optimised for the audience looking for that book.

I sold 7 pre-orders in a matter of days.

I haven’t looked back.

🌟 7 Pre-Orders and a Whole New Beginning

That moment changed everything.

I finally understood that writing the book is only part of the job. Selling it is a whole different skill—a skill I was determined to master.

Since then, I’ve turned “steamy short stories” into my full-time career. And you know what? It’s been one of the most rewarding adventures of my life.
